A brown tee is a strange thing for a sportswear company to make and a very natural one for Jacquemus, whose whole register is warm neutrals and southern French light. That contrast is the point of this collaboration: Nike supplies the athletic vocabulary and the Swoosh, a mark drawn by design student Carolyn Davidson and first used on 18 June 1971, and Jacquemus supplies the palette and the restraint. Nike has spent decades learning that its logo works hardest when it is placed rather than plastered, which is what happens on a garment like this. In brown rather than the sportswear defaults of black, white or grey, the shirt asks to be read as clothing first and kit second.
First: wear it with cream or off white wide leg trousers and minimal jewellery, letting brown and cream carry the whole outfit in a tonal register that suits warm weather and evening light. Second: tuck it into black tailored trousers with a leather belt and a light overshirt, which turns a sportswear collaboration into something that works in a restaurant. Occasion is broad daytime and casual evening rather than training, since a cotton lifestyle tee will hold sweat rather than move it. Size for the fit you want, going up one for a boxier drape. Wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, skip the tumble dryer and line dry out of direct sun so the brown stays deep.
Nike moving into the fashion house lane is a continuation of what its clothing has done since the 1980s, when its products became status markers in urban and hip hop fashion and then, through the 1990s and 2000s, the base layer of athleisure. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired on 1 July that year, gave the brand a voice that worked outside sport and made this kind of crossover legible. Branding is minimal and placed, the collaboration mark carried small rather than across the chest, which is what allows the brown to do the work. Nike's apparel platform is Dri-FIT, its moisture wicking fabric technology, but a lifestyle cotton tee like this is built for feel and drape instead, so judge it on hand, weight and how the neckline holds after washing.
