Designed by Designer. This piece is made in upper material. Nike's voice outside sport was built on writing, not just product. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 for the agency Nike has worked with since 1976, gave the company a language that worked on a T-shirt as well as on a billboard, and graphic apparel has carried that language ever since. This is the NOCTA sub-label's L'Art Burrow tee, cut to Asia sizing, in Pro Green. The colour matters: a deep, slightly dulled green rather than a sports brightness, which lets the print sit as artwork instead of as team kit. Style code FD2206 397 identifies it. Buy it for the graphic, because that is the whole design.
Recipe one: worn loose over black wide-leg trousers with white low top sneakers, letting the green read as the single colour and the print as the only graphic in the fit. Recipe two: layered under an unzipped grey hoodie or an open workshirt with the print half visible, which is how graphic tees look best once the weather turns. Size up one from your usual if you want a relaxed drape, given the Asia sizing. Wash cold, inside out, with the print facing in, and hang to dry, because tumble heat is what cracks graphic transfers and dulls a green body. Do not iron directly over the artwork.
Nike's relationship with music has been the most volatile part of its culture and also the most productive. The unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution ended in a lawsuit and pulled ads by March 1988, and Nike SB's 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye. The lesson the company took was to build with music people rather than around them, and the sub-label imprints are the current form of that. A graphic tee is where those imprints actually live, because it is the cheapest entry point and the most visible: it is worn in daylight, at eye level, by people who chose the artwork on purpose.
A short sleeve cotton jersey tee built as a graphic carrier: crew neck, ribbed collar, set sleeves, and a body cut fuller than a standard athletic fit so the print has a flat surface to sit on. The L'Art Burrow artwork is the design event, and everything else is deliberately quiet. Note the Asia sizing on this piece, which runs smaller and shorter than the equivalent US or EU label, so the size on the tag is not the size you usually take. Pro Green is a saturated mid-green that holds print contrast well but will fade with hot washing faster than a black or white body would, so treat it as a coloured garment rather than a basic.
