Designed by Designer. This release has a upper material upper. Velvet Brown is the deeper, richer sibling in this pair of releases, style code IO7694 200. Where an excavated, dusty brown reads as matte and archaeological, velvet suggests depth and pile, a brown with light in it rather than dust on it. That distinction is the entire difference between these two shoes and it is worth taking seriously, because on a minimal silhouette like the Air Rift the material and the tone are the design. Nike has been building product under its own name since 1972, after ending the Onitsuka Tiger distribution arrangement it had run since 1964, and the shapes it invented in the decades since keep getting recoloured by people who want the engineering without the sportswear reading.
Deep brown is easier to place than most people assume. First recipe: black and brown together, black wide leg trousers with a brown or camel knit, using the shoe to connect the two rather than to stand out. Second: denim, indigo and mid blue, with a white or ecru top, where a saturated brown does what a black shoe cannot and warms the whole thing up. This runs low in volume and close to the foot, so sizing is personal and a thick sock is not really an option. Suited to dry days and indoor evenings rather than commuting through rain. Brush it dry, spot clean gently, and keep it out of direct sun so the depth of the colour does not fade.
The interesting thing about Nike is how often it has succeeded by handing the microphone over. Wieden+Kennedy, its agency partner since 1976, produced Just Do It in 1988, a line so far outside standard sports advertising that it ended up in the Smithsonian and on Advertising Age's list of the century's five best slogans. The company has since worked with figures well outside athletics, including the artist Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022. A rich brown minimalist shoe released under a fashion led sub line belongs to that tradition: the shape and the engineering are Nike's, the taste is somebody else's, and the audience is not a sports audience.
Judge this one by surface. On a shoe with very little upper material, every square centimetre is doing visual work, so a deep, saturated brown behaves quite differently from a pale one: it holds shadow, it makes the silhouette look smaller and denser, and it disguises marks better. The Nike construction habit that applies here is subtraction. Flywire secures a foot with cables instead of panels, Lunarlite cut weight out of the midsole, and Nike Air replaced solid material with pressurised gas; the throughline is that support does not require bulk. This is that principle expressed as a wardrobe object, so expect a shoe that feels closer to the foot than a cushioned sneaker and asks for a more precise fit.
