Triple Black on the sixth generation Cloud is the most bought version of the most bought shoe in the range, and the reason is unromantic: it goes with everything and it never looks dirty. The Cloud line runs back to the Cloudracer of 2012, raced by Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig, and further back to a prototype Olivier Bernhard made in Zurich by gluing sections of a cut garden hose to a sole. He had shown that idea to Nike and been turned down before founding On in 2010 with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. Blacking the shoe out removes the visual explanation of all that and leaves only the profile, which is how most people prefer to carry engineering.
Treat this as the shoe you stop thinking about. Recipe one: black trousers, a charcoal knit and a navy coat, where the shoe finishes a smart outfit without dragging it casual. Recipe two: dark grey sweatpants, a black hoodie and a bomber, a travel build that survives a red eye and still looks intentional at arrivals. Best for commuting, airports, long walking days, standing shifts and easy runs. Fit true to size with a snug midfoot and secure heel. Rotate them so the upper dries fully, clear the pod cavities weekly with a key or a brush, and replace the laces when they fray rather than washing the whole shoe hot.
On's growth is recent and steep. By 2019 it was selling through about 6,000 retailers in 55 countries, it listed on the NYSE in September 2021, and 2024 revenue reached 2.32 billion Swiss francs with net profit up 204.5 percent. The everyday Cloud in black is the anonymous engine of that number, the shoe bought by people who saw one on a colleague and wanted the same thing in a colour nobody would notice. Culturally On reads as a design object rather than a scene, which suits a fully blacked out shoe: the only statement it makes is that you know what it is.
Under the monochrome, the sole is still a structural system rather than a soft compound. On shapes foam into engineered cavities so the pods compress horizontally as well as vertically, absorbing impact and supporting the foot through multiple directions in the stride. The sixth generation Cloud sits on the light and nimble end of the range rather than the maximal end, so expect a responsive ride rather than a plush one. All black is the lowest maintenance finish On makes, but it is not maintenance free: the cavities collect stones and compacted grit that dull the ride, and a dark closed upper needs airing between wears more than a mesh one does.
