Part of On Running's Cloudmonster 2 line. This release has a mesh upper in Tempest/Horizon. The Cloudmonster is the model where On stopped being polite about cushioning. Where the first Clouds argued for a light, quick sensation, the Monster took the same house idea and made it enormous, and the second generation refined that mass rather than backing away from it. Tempest Horizon plays the name straight: a storm dark base lifting into a lighter band, the kind of gradient that makes a tall midsole look intentional instead of accidental. The lineage still runs back to a garden hose in Zurich in 2010, when Olivier Bernhard glued hose sections to a sole to prove a hollow shape could land soft and push off firm, so the biggest shoe in the range is still arguing the founding point, only louder.
Utility
A tall sole wants clean lines above it. Recipe one: slate grey tapered trackpants and a black half zip, where the storm gradient reads as one continuous column from knee to ground. Recipe two: mid blue relaxed jeans with a stacked hem over the collar and a navy crewneck, letting the horizon fade break up the denim. Use them for long days on hard surfaces, easy road mileage and airport corridors, not for lateral gym work where a tall stack is the wrong tool. Fit is true to size with a roomy forefoot, so lock the laces down through the top eyelets. Knock trapped stones out of the pods weekly and hand clean the midsole walls with a soft brush.
Influence
On is fifteen years old and grew fast enough to feel established, listing on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2021 under ONON and reaching 2.32 billion Swiss francs of revenue in 2024. The Cloudmonster is the silhouette that carried that growth outside running clubs, because a big visible sole photographs well and reads as engineering at a glance. The brand's cultural entry point was endurance sport, then Roger Federer taking an equity stake in November 2019, and today its meaning sits closer to Swiss design object than to street. Hoka is the rival everyone names, and the Monster is the shoe that answers it directly on presence as well as on ride.
Construction
The Cloudmonster uses hexagonal CloudTec pods, and the geometry does specific work: they load energy on impact and release it on take off. That is a structural system, foam shaped into engineered cavities, not a soft compound doing all the work by itself, which is why a shoe this tall does not feel vague underfoot. The pods compress horizontally as well as vertically, so the support is multi directional through the roll rather than a single straight line push. Tempest Horizon keeps the darker tone low where scuffing happens and the lighter tone high where it shows off the stack, a sensible way to wear a large sole every day.
