Released on 5 March 2025 and part of On Running's Cloudsurfer Next line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Eclipse. The Cloudsurfer Next is the smoother, softer branch of On's thinking, the one that answers people who found early Cloud models too firm underfoot. That tension has been in the company since the beginning: Olivier Bernhard's original hose and glue prototype in Zurich in 2010 was built to prove a shoe could be soft on landing and firm on push off, and every model since has tuned the balance differently. This women's pair in Black Eclipse takes the softer end and hides it in a blackout finish, so the shape stays quiet while the ride does the talking. It is the version you buy when you want the comfort argument without the visual one, which is a very Swiss way to sell a shoe.
Black is the versatile buy, so lean into it. Outfit one: black leggings, a longline black coat and a grey scarf, where the shoe disappears into the column and only the pod line reads. Outfit two: straight leg jeans with a turned cuff, a white knit and a camel overshirt, which is the version that works for a school run, an office with a relaxed dress code, or a long walk. Women's sizing runs true with a snug midfoot, so go half up if you wear cushioned socks. Keep it out of the washing machine, wipe with a barely damp cloth, and dry at room temperature so the pod geometry keeps its rebound.
On's women's line sits inside a brand that reached the mainstream through sport rather than styling. Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and The Roger launched in July 2020, and from March 2023 the tennis roster added Iga Swiatek, then world number one, alongside Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca. That combination kept On visible in serious competition while the design world adopted it for how obviously built it looks. A blacked out Cloudsurfer Next belongs to the everyday half of that audience, worn by people who want the engineering underfoot and nothing announced on top. It is the least performative way to wear a technical running shoe.
Black Eclipse runs dark across upper and sole unit, so the pod openings register as shadow lines rather than as a graphic. The cushioning is structural: CloudTec engineers foam into specialised geometries, hollow pods that compress in more than one plane so the shoe takes the hit and then supports you across the whole stride instead of only at the heel. On's CloudTec family includes several variants tuned to purpose, which is how a softer model and a firmer one share a house code. The brand is Swiss designed out of Zurich with production in Indonesia and Vietnam. Black shows dust rather than scuffs, so a dry brush across the upper and through the cavities restores it quickly.
