Released on 24 October 2020 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Directoire Blue. The VIN designation marks the vintage finished reading of the Mexico 66, where the shoe is built to look like it has already lived a life rather than like it just left the box. White and Directoire Blue is the sharpest colour pairing that treatment comes in: a soft, aged white body with a strong, slightly regal blue running through the crossed Tiger Stripes and the heel. The original 1966 shoe was a flagship built to take on Adidas and Puma before the 1968 Mexico City Games, and a yellowed white with a saturated blue is exactly how a surviving pair from that era would look in a collector's cabinet today.
Two recipes. First, off white wide leg chinos, a faded blue chambray shirt and a woven belt, letting the Directoire Blue stripes echo the shirt. Second, mid wash straight jeans with a navy quarter zip and white crew socks, a plain fit where the aged white keeps the shoe from looking new and overthought. The vintage finish makes this the easiest Mexico 66 to wear in imperfect conditions, because small marks read as patina. Fit is narrow and slightly long, so go true to size. Do not try to whiten the upper with bleach based cleaners, since that fights the finish. Brush gently, spot clean, and let it age.
Onitsuka Tiger disappeared for roughly twenty five years after the 1977 merger that created Asics, and the 2002 revival deliberately rebuilt it as a fashion label. Vintage finished executions are that strategy at its most literal: the brand selling its own dormancy back as a texture. Since the early 2020s the Mexico 66 has been a staple of sneaker culture again, carried by the shift away from chunky sneakers toward slim, low profile shapes, and the aged white versions have been central to that because they slot into a wardrobe instead of shouting across it. The brand has also grown well beyond footwear into apparel, bags, denim and accessories.
The bones are unchanged: slim toed leather upper, narrow last, low flat profile and a thin cupsole with the Tiger Stripes stitched on as structural overlays. What the vintage treatment changes is surface. The white leather carries a warmed, off tone finish rather than a bright optic white, and the sole edge is toned to match rather than left stark. That means the shoe photographs softer and ages more gracefully, because it does not start from a perfect state you then have to protect. Directoire Blue on the stripes stays clean and strong against that aged base, which is what keeps the shoe from reading dusty. Underfoot it is flat, thin and honest.
