Pharrell x adidas Boost Slides Bright Orange
Pharrell x adidas Boost Slides Bright Orange
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Released on 1 August 2020 and part of the Adilette Boost line. This release has a synthetic upper in Bright Orange/Bright Orange/Bright Orange. This is the slide that gets adidas's most important modern technology under a bare foot. Boost launched in adidas running in 2013 and became the defining material of the brand's last decade, and putting it into a slide is a genuinely funny and genuinely useful idea. Pharrell Williams works here as a designer collaborator, and Bright Orange is the least apologetic colour he could have picked for it: high visibility, closer to safety equipment than to sportswear, on an object most people buy in black. The result is a slide that reads as a design statement from ten metres away and behaves like the most comfortable thing in your wardrobe up close.
Utility
Orange is a commitment, so let the rest go quiet. Recipe one: grey sweat shorts with a white tee for gym recovery and post training wear, where Boost underfoot is the actual reason you are wearing it. Recipe two: black wide leg trousers with a black tee, a full blackout outfit that turns the slide into the only colour and the only texture. Rinse the footbed after sweaty or sandy use, because Boost's surface traps grit in its texture more than a smooth EVA slide does. Clean with mild soap and a soft cloth, never solvents. Air dry in shade, since prolonged direct sun will dull a bright orange surface over a season.
Influence
Boost is the technology adidas actually won with, carrying the Ultraboost, NMD, Energy Boost, Pure Boost and adizero Adios Boost, and its distinctive pellet surface became a visual signature people recognised without knowing the chemistry. That is the modern equivalent of what the Superstar's shell toe did decades earlier, when the shoe was worn by a reported 75 percent of NBA players by 1973 and then adopted wholesale by hip hop. adidas keeps producing details that escape their original purpose. A designer collaborator taking Boost out of running and putting it under a slide is that escape happening deliberately, in orange, with no performance claim attached.
Construction
Boost is a thermoplastic polyurethane adidas developed with the German chemical company BASF, made of thousands of fused TPU pellets, and its bounce comes from how the material is processed rather than from the raw polymer. It returns more energy than the industry standard EVA foam and stays more stable across temperatures, which is why it holds up in heat where cheap foam goes flat. Under a slide, with no upper or lacing to manage pressure, you feel that pellet structure directly. Bright Orange makes the pellet texture visible rather than hiding it, so the material itself becomes the graphic. The strap does the retention work and nothing else needs to.
