Designed by Designer. This piece is made in upper material. Shawn Stussy was shaping surfboards in Laguna Beach when he began signing them with a broad tipped marker, a fluid scrawl that borrowed equally from graffiti handstyles and from his uncle, the abstract painter Jan Frederick Stussy. He silkscreened that same signature onto blank tees to promote the boards, sold them out of his car around Laguna, and by 1980 the side project had a name, formalised with business partner Frank Sinatra Jr. The Basic Stussy Tee is the direct descendant of that first move: the signature, screen printed on a shirt, nothing added. This is the piece the entire company grew out of, and it has never needed a redesign, which is why the Stussy Basic Tee Navy carries over season after season while the graphic drops rotate out.
Navy is the most useful colour in the Basic Stussy run because it works like a neutral without black's starkness. Two ways to run the Stussy Basic Tee Navy. First, straight streetwear: loose over wide light wash denim or fatigues, white leather sneakers, and let the white chest hit and the full back print carry the whole outfit. Second, the grown up version, tucked into cream or stone pleated trousers with brown loafers, a combination navy handles far better than black in Indian daylight. The cut is relaxed, so buy your usual size for the intended drape and only size down if you want it close to the body. Wash cold and inside out, dry in shade. The white screen print across the back is what ages first, and dryer heat plus direct sun is precisely what cracks it.
Stussy did not simply make streetwear, it wrote the operating manual. From the mid eighties Shawn Stussy handed free product to a loose global network of DJs, artists, musicians and photographers, formalised around 1987 as the International Stussy Tribe with chapters in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. Keith Haring and Dante Ross ran with the New York chapter, Goldie and Don Letts with London, and Shawn's travels put him alongside Nigo and Hiroshi Fujiwara in Japan. Members were thanked with personalised varsity jackets. That is streetwear's first influencer network, assembled long before the word existed, and every seeding strategy since is a copy of it. The Basic Tee is the quietest way to buy into that lineage: no collab, no hype cycle, just the signature.
Midweight 6.5 ounce cotton jersey, 100 percent cotton, tubular knit with no side seams. Every one of those specs earns its place. Six and a half ounces is the right weight for India: substantial enough that the shirt hangs off the shoulder instead of clinging, and dense enough that navy stays properly opaque, but still light enough to wear through a humid afternoon. Tubular knit means the body is one continuous loop of fabric with nothing running down your ribs, so the shirt cannot twist out of line after ten washes. The Stussy basic logo is screen printed in white at the left chest and again full size across the back. Ribbed crew neck, short sleeves with hemmed openings, flat stitched bottom hem, relaxed rather than slim through the body.
