Part of On Running's Cloud X 3 line. This release has a mesh upper in Ivory/Alloy. On's founding idea was a sensation, not a shoe: Olivier Bernhard glued sections of a cut garden hose to a sole to see whether a hollow shape could cushion on landing and firm up for push off. Nike turned the concept down, so Bernhard started On in Zurich in 2010 with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti and made CloudTec the visible signature of the company. Cloud X is the third generation of the shorter, sharper end of that family, and this women's pair arrives in Ivory Alloy: a warm off white body with a cool metallic grey worked through it. The pairing is deliberately neutral, which is what lets a training shoe leave the gym without announcing itself.
Ivory Alloy is a gym to street colour, so use it that way. Pair it with grey seamless leggings and a cropped ivory windbreaker for training, then with wide cream linen trousers and a white tank when you are out of the studio. It suits classes, short efforts and travel more than long road mileage, and the neutral tone flatters cropped hems that show the ankle. Take your usual training size and expect a closer, more secure fit than a max cushioned runner. Ivory shows sweat and dust, so air the shoes out of the bag straight after use, wipe the upper with a damp cloth and mild soap, and brush the outsole cavities dry so nothing sets in the pods.
The brand's culture came out of endurance sport and then out of one person. On grew from triathlon and road running, backs the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein and sponsors runners including David Kilgore. Roger Federer becoming a shareholder in November 2019 and putting his name on The Roger in July 2020 pushed the label from specialist to lifestyle, and Iga Swiatek signing in March 2023 as world number one kept it inside mainstream sport. Cloud X sits at the crossover point of that story, the shoe that turns up in a class and then on the walk home. Its meaning today is Swiss engineered design object rather than street credential.
CloudTec is a structural cushioning system rather than a cushioning material, and that distinction is the whole design. The pods are engineered cavities that compress both horizontally and vertically, so support arrives from more than one direction as the foot loads, lands and turns. In a lower, quicker shape like this one that reads as a responsive underfoot feel rather than a deep sink, which is what you want for mixed movement and short efforts. Ivory Alloy keeps the tonal split useful: the pale body carries the upper, the alloy grey lands on branding and the sole where scuffing happens first. On designs in Zurich and produces in Indonesia and Vietnam, with the engineered look treated as the finish.
