Part of the The Roger Pro 2 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Black. The women's Roger Pro 2 Clay in black is the least conventional way to buy into the most conventional sport. The Roger line began when Roger Federer took a shareholding in On in November 2019 and put his name to a limited edition lifestyle shoe in July 2020, and the Pro branch turned that into an actual competition tool. Clay is the slowest, most physical surface in tennis, which makes a clay-specific model a shoe built for long points and constant sliding. Choosing it in black rather than tournament white is a small act of defiance in a sport that still leans heavily on tradition, and it is why this make-up looks different on court from everything around it.
On court, it pairs best with black or deep-tone kit, a pleated skirt or shorts and a technical tank, with a cushioned ankle sock so the collar does not chafe during slides. Off court, wear it with black tapered trousers or a midi skirt and a fitted white top, where it passes as a low, clean sneaker rather than sports equipment. Keep it for clay and practice courts, because court rubber wears down fast on concrete. Knock the soles together after play to clear packed clay from the tread, wipe the upper with a damp cloth, and air dry. Fit it snug with zero heel lift, since sliding safely depends on the foot not moving inside the shoe.
On earned its place on clay by signing players, not by borrowing heritage. From March 2023 the brand added world number one Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca, with Flavio Cobolli following in June 2024, all of it built on Federer's shareholding and collaboration. For a company founded in 2010 that started in Swiss triathlon, that is a rapid arrival in a sport that usually rewards long tenure. The Roger Pro 2 Clay is the product where On's engineering-first identity meets tennis convention head on, and the black version is the sharpest expression of the collision.
Clay play is lateral before it is linear, and the Pro 2 Clay is built around holding the foot through a slide and releasing the surface cleanly rather than packing it. On's CloudTec sits underneath as a structural cushioning system, geometry engineered into the sole so the pods compress horizontally as well as vertically and support the foot in more than one plane, which is exactly the demand a court makes. The black upper is the practical choice on a surface that stains everything it touches, since clay dust reads as a light film rather than a permanent mark. As a women's-specific build, expect a narrower fit through the midfoot and heel than the unisex version.
