Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Sesame
Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Sesame
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 23 November 2018 as part of the Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Sesame/Sesame/Sesame. Sesame is the Boost 350 V2 doing what the label was actually best at: naming a colour after something you could eat or hold and then making the shoe look exactly like it. It belongs to the same family of thinking as Oxford Tan, Butter and Flax, a warm off white with a faint grey cast, closer to raw seed than to cream. Where Beluga used a contrast band to make the silhouette legible, Sesame removes every contrast and asks the shape to carry itself. The model launched on 24 September 2016 and became the most recognisable sneaker outline of the decade, so by the time this colourway arrived the shape needed no help. It is the connoisseur's version of the shoe, the one that assumes you already know.
Utility
A warm off white is the most useful shoe colour there is, but only if you keep it clean. First recipe: stone pleated trousers, a white tee, a navy overshirt, a smart casual fit where the shoe reads almost formal. Second recipe: light wash denim with a clean hem and an oatmeal knit, fully tonal and warm. Occasion: daily wear, dinners, travel, anywhere you would otherwise reach for plain white sneakers. Fit runs narrow through the midfoot and snug at the toe, so half a size up is the common call. Care is preventative: protectant spray before first wear, dry brush after each use, spot clean with mild soap only, never machine wash, and dry in shade to avoid yellowing.
Influence
The 350 V2 turned release day into a mainstream cultural event and created the machinery, announced drop times, deliberately limited stock, bots and resale, that the rest of the footwear industry then adopted as standard. GQ named these the most influential sneakers in 2016. Quiet colourways like Sesame are the reason the silhouette outlived the hype cycle: they were bought to wear rather than to hold. That run closed on 25 October 2022, when adidas terminated the partnership after Kanye West's antisemitic public remarks, which the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated company values.
Construction
Primeknit forms the upper, the one piece machine knitted construction that gives the 350 V2 its sock like fit with no traditional panels, and Sesame runs one tone across the whole foot so the knit's own pattern is the only texture. Boost sits underneath, the expanded TPU pellet foam responsible for the bounce and the speckled surface, toned here to sit within a shade of the upper. There is no visible logo, in line with the anti branding stance across the line. In practice this is a light, low, close fitting shoe that is far more comfortable on concrete than its slim profile suggests. The honest warning is the same as with every pale knit: the toe area will grey first.
