Released on 24 November 2023 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Silver Metallic. The 1906R takes its name from the year New Balance opened, when William J Riley started the New Balance Arch Support Company near Boston and sold arch supports rather than shoes. That is a heavy name for a shoe to carry, and the 1906R earns it by being a technical runner reissued without apology, all exposed structure and layered panels. Silver Metallic Cream is the version that treats the shoe as an object rather than a running tool, running a cool metallic finish against a warm cream base so the two temperatures fight slightly. The result reads futuristic and archival at once, which is exactly the register this model occupies in the line.
Metallic wants restraint elsewhere. Recipe one: cream or stone wide leg trousers, a white tee and a light grey jacket, a full warm neutral outfit where the silver panels are the only cool element. Recipe two: black technical trousers and a black shell, letting the cream and silver split the difference and keep the fit from going entirely dark. This is a city walking shoe, good for travel and long days on foot, poor in rain since cream marks fast and metallic finishes dull. Check the width fitting before sizing. Wipe metallic surfaces with a soft dry cloth rather than scrubbing, brush the textile sections, spot clean cream early, and dry away from direct heat.
New Balance's authority comes from running, not from celebrity. The Trackster in 1960 was the first running shoe offered in varying widths and spread through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country at MIT, Tufts and Boston University, and the brand still sponsors New York Road Runners rather than chasing star endorsements. The 1906R belongs to that technical lineage, brought back into fashion because the archive itself became fashionable. Since April 2021, when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA, the company has formalised that treatment, designing new shoes in the language of old ones. A metallic colourway is the fashion side of that project speaking plainly.
This colourway is a study in surface. Metallic silver panels reflect and shift as you move, while the cream sections absorb light and stay matte, so the shoe's layering is legible from across a room without a single contrast stripe. The block N sits on the side wall as the house mark. New Balance's cushioning heritage frames how these runners are built: ENCAP, introduced with the 995 in 1986, is a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core for structure, durability and low compression set, while ABZORB is the softer proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips. Width fittings remain part of the sizing conversation.
