Released on 1 October 2023 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Sandstone/Turtledove/Gold Metallic. The 2002R sits on New Balance's premium running shelf, the same shelf that made grey suede a status colour rather than a default. Sandstone plays that history in a desert key: a warm, dusty upper that looks less like a mid-2000s tech runner and more like one recovered from a dig. That is the Protection Pack idea. Where a standard 2002R is finished clean, this treatment leaves the shoe looking stripped and weathered, structure exposed instead of capped, standing in for years of wear you never put in. It works because the brand's power was always plainness. New Balance spent decades building running shoes nobody called fashionable, so when fashion arrived the archive was already full of shapes worth pulling forward and roughing up.
Two ways in. First, lean into the earth tone: ecru or off white wide leg trousers, a washed brown tee, and a canvas overshirt, so the sandstone upper becomes the warmest thing in the outfit rather than a mismatch. Second, contrast it: black tapered cargos with a cropped hem and a charcoal crew, letting the pale suede sit as the only light note. This last runs long for many feet, so try a half size down before committing, and use the width fittings if your foot sits wide. Pale sand suede marks fast in city dust and monsoon spray, so seal it before first wear, brush it dry with a crepe block, and keep it off wet streets.
New Balance's cultural life has been mostly accidental, which is exactly why it holds. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, grey and comfortable, bought for the foot rather than the feed, and Steve Jobs is a documented wearer of New Balance 990s. Normcore reclaimed that plainness as a position, then high fashion did, and when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, the industry was only formalising what the culture had already decided. A weathered sandstone runner sits squarely in that turn. It treats the archive as material to be aged and edited rather than preserved under glass, which is why it reads current instead of nostalgic.
Suede and mesh do the work up top, in sandstone tones that absorb dust rather than show it. The Protection Pack finish deliberately leaves the build visible: overlays trimmed back, foam left open where a normal make would seal it, so the pair arrives looking lived in on day one. Underfoot sits ABZORB, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, which disperses heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips. It is softer and lighter than ENCAP, the moulded polyurethane rim around an EVA core that structures the 990 and 574, and less supportive in exchange, so this rides plush rather than planted. The block N on the side wall is the house mark, and multiple width fittings remain the brand's oldest technical promise.
