Released on 28 March 2022 and part of New Balance's 574 line. This release has a mesh upper in Nimbus Cloud/Grey/White. The 574 is New Balance's most democratic shoe, the one that carried the brand's fit and support logic to people who never read a spec sheet. It descends from a company that started in 1906 making arch supports rather than shoes, and it wears that inheritance in the most useful way possible: it just fits. The Core Pack strips the model back to its base grammar, and Nimbus Cloud is the softest reading in that set, a pale grey that sits somewhere between off white and overcast. Grey is not a neutral choice at New Balance, it is the house colour, the shade that made the brand's running shoes into everyday objects. This is the 574 in its plainest and most honest register.
Pale grey is the easiest sneaker colour to build around. Recipe one: raw denim, a white oxford shirt worn loose and a navy knit, letting Nimbus Cloud sit as the lightest note in the outfit. Recipe two: olive fatigues, a grey marl sweatshirt and a canvas tote for a tonal weekend that never tips into monochrome. This is a walking shoe for cities, offices with a relaxed code and long unstructured days, not a gym shoe. Check the width fittings before committing to a length. Pale suede is unforgiving, so protect them before first wear, brush dry after every few outings, spot clean with minimal water, and dry them slowly away from heat to stop the panels stiffening.
New Balance's plainness was reclaimed, not designed. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, grey and unbothered, favoured by Steve Jobs and later worn by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion turned that greyness into a position in the 2010s. The 574 is where that idea reached the widest audience, because it was the accessible entry into the same visual language. Wearing Nimbus Cloud is a deliberate refusal of loudness, which is precisely why it works now. The brand's own answer to its cultural moment came in April 2021, when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis took over Made in USA and started treating the archive as a fashion line.
The 574 runs on ENCAP, the classic New Balance midsole introduced with the 995 in 1986: a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core, so the polyurethane supplies structure, durability and low compression set while the EVA takes the shock. That combination is why a 574 holds its shape after seasons of wear instead of collapsing at the heel. The upper is the familiar panelled construction with the block N across the side wall, built to be lived in rather than preserved. Multiple width fittings remain available across the line, the oldest technical promise the brand makes. In Nimbus Cloud the panelling reads as texture rather than contrast, so the shoe looks quieter than its outline suggests.
