Released on 12 May 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Arctic Grey/Vintage Indigo/Steel. Arctic Grey is the pale, almost blue end of grey, and it changes the temperature of the 9060 completely. Where a warm sand build makes the silhouette look soft and a dark grey makes it look serious, this cold light tone makes it look designed. That suits a shoe whose entire premise is design: the 9060 takes the panel language of New Balance's 99x runners and warps it, adding volume and curve to shapes the originals kept flat and straight. It is a fashion object made from running parts, produced by a company that spent most of its life avoiding fashion entirely, which is exactly what gives it credibility now.
Cold grey pairs best with other cold colours. Recipe one: light wash denim, a white tee, and a grey zip up, where everything sits in the same temperature and the sculpted sole carries the interest. Recipe two: black tailored trousers with a pale blue shirt, a smart casual read where the shoe stops the outfit feeling formal. Avoid brown and tan, which turn the arctic tone muddy. Keep hems short enough to show the sole shape. Care is the real commitment: protector spray before wearing, a suede brush weekly, a midsole eraser on the foxing, and no monsoon wear at all if you want the pale panels to stay pale.
New Balance's collaboration list is built on designers rather than celebrities, from British designer Paul Smith on a 576 released in June 2018 to Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis, appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. That is a brand that trusts design people with its archive, and the 9060 is the in house version of the same instinct: take the 99x shapes and let a designer distort them. A cold, pale grey is how you finish a shoe like that when you want the silhouette read as a considered object rather than as a loud sneaker, which is precisely why this colourway ended up on so many people who claim not to follow sneakers.
A pale grey mesh base carries suede overlays in close, cool tones, with the panelling stacked so the shoe reads as layers rather than as a single moulded mass. Light greys are the hardest colours to keep on a shoe this size, because every panel edge collects dirt and the sole edge greys fast. ABZORB handles impact, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend developed to disperse heel strike before it travels into the knees and hips, softer and less structurally supportive than ENCAP's moulded polyurethane rim and EVA core. The brand's width fittings apply here as everywhere, and on a high volume shoe they are the difference between secure and sloppy through the midfoot.
