Origin
Released on 13 August 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Phantom. The 9060 is what happens when a brand with a genuinely deep archive decides to remix itself rather than reissue. It takes the language of the 99x family, the line that runs 990 in 1982, 990v2 in 1998, 991 in 2001, 992 in 2006 and onward, and exaggerates it into something warped and contemporary. In black, all of that distortion goes quiet. The sculpting is still there in the sole and the panelling, but you read the shape before you read the details, which makes this the most wearable version of an intentionally strange shoe. New Balance has been solving foot support since 1906, and the 9060 is proof the company can play with its own grammar without losing the plot.
Utility
Black lets a strange shoe pass anywhere. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers, a charcoal knit and a long overcoat, where the sculpted sole becomes the only texture in an otherwise flat outfit. Recipe two: dark straight jeans, a black tee and a leather jacket for an evening look that never reads as gym. These handle city walking, travel and late nights well, but the panelled upper is not built for rain. Size with the width fittings in mind, as the sculpted footbed rewards an accurate fit. Brush the mesh dry, wipe the smooth panels with a barely damp cloth, treat the midsole with care since black soles show white scuffing, and air dry only.
Influence
The 99x family gave New Balance its cultural weight, first as the plain grey shoe worn for comfort rather than status, favoured by Steve Jobs and later by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, then as the object normcore and high fashion reclaimed in the 2010s. The 9060 is the brand answering that attention on its own terms, distorting the archive instead of protecting it. It arrived into a period when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis, appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, had already made archive as fashion an official position. Triple black takes that experimental shape and makes it work in rooms where a grey suede runner would look too casual.
Construction
Blacked out, the 9060 becomes an exercise in silhouette. The upper layers panels and mesh over a heavily sculpted midsole, with the block N as the only fixed landmark on the side wall. New Balance's midsole thinking runs on two named systems, ENCAP, a moulded polyurethane rim encapsulating a soft EVA core for structure, durability and low compression set, and ABZORB, a proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend designed to disperse heel strike impact. Both descend from a company that started in 1906 making arch supports, which is also why width fittings remain part of the buying decision. A tonal black build hides scuffing better than any other colourway, but it also flattens detail, so the shoe lives or dies on its proportions.
