Released on 1 July 2024 and part of the adiFOM Megaride line. This release has a mesh upper in Crystal White/Silver Metallic/Core Black. adiFOM Megaride takes the moulded foam idea and pushes it towards a runner rather than a clog. Where the Q reads as sculpture, the Megaride reads as a trainer that has been melted into a single piece, with the ridged, rolling sole shape that gives it its name. It belongs to the branch of adidas that has always wanted to build something nobody has seen, the same instinct that produced the adidas 1 in 2005, marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe with a microprocessor adjusting cushioning five million times a second, and springblade with its splayed blades. Crystal White is the clean laboratory reading: no colour to distract from the geometry, every ridge and cut visible.
Two approaches. First, all white everything: cream or white wide trousers with a white or grey top, where the shoe becomes texture in a monochrome outfit. Second, maximum contrast: black technical clothing, black socks, so the Crystal White body reads as an object clipped onto a dark silhouette. Best for warm weather, short walks and any day you take footwear on and off repeatedly. There is no lacing, so the fit is entirely the mould: foam runs roomy and a half size down suits many people. White foam stains, so clean with mild soap and a soft brush regularly rather than waiting, avoid solvents which eat foam, and never dry near heat because the body will deform out of shape.
adidas earned its authority twice, first through sport from Jesse Owens in 1936 onwards, then through music it never paid for when Run-DMC put My Adidas out in 1986. Neither of those stories helps a shoe like this, which is why it matters. Foam runners are the company arguing that it can still make something new rather than reissue something loved, and the Trefoil that marks Originals now sits on product with no twentieth century ancestor at all. White is the colour that dares you to wear it, since it makes the silhouette maximally visible. This is deliberately not a shoe that blends in.
One piece of moulded foam does the entire job, upper and sole together, with the ride characteristics designed into the geometry rather than layered in as separate parts. The ridges along the sole control how the shoe compresses and rolls through a step, which is the closest a foam shoe gets to tuning. Cut through openings through the body handle ventilation and flex. The Three Stripes appear as formed surface detail, which is a long way from their origin as stitched reinforcement on a leather upper, but the visual job is the same. Crystal White hides nothing: every mould line reads, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on your tolerance for showing the manufacturing.
