Adidas Adifom Q White Grey
Adidas Adifom Q White Grey

Origin
Adifom is adidas making shoes out of moulded foam rather than assembling them from panels, and the Q is the model in that family that reduces a familiar silhouette to a sculpted shell with cut outs where the structure used to be. The company has form for this kind of engineering spectacle: springblade replaced conventional foam with splayed blades, and the adidas 1 was marketed in 2005 as an intelligent shoe whose onboard microprocessor ran five million calculations a second to adjust its own cushioning while you walked. White with Grey keeps the sculpture legible, since a two tone treatment lets you read the moulded form and the inner layer separately. Style codes IE7447 and HP6584 are both listed against this pair.
Utility
Wear it where a sculptural shoe makes sense: wide leg trousers with a hem that stops above the collar so the form is visible, with a plain top and no other statement pieces. The second route is deliberately casual, with shorts and a heavy sock so the cut outs frame the sock colour, which changes the shoe completely depending on what you put underneath. Moulded footwear runs differently to lasted footwear, so check the fit rather than assuming your usual size, and expect a snug entry over the instep. Clean white foam with a damp cloth and mild soap, avoid solvents which will mark it, and store out of direct sunlight to stop it yellowing.
Influence
The shell toe of the Superstar, a moulded rubber cap made to protect players' feet under the basket, is the most copied silhouette detail adidas has produced, and it established that a moulded element could define a shoe's identity on its own. The Adifom family pushes that principle to its conclusion by making the moulded element the entire shoe. This is the company treating its own archive as a set of ideas rather than a set of products, which is the same instinct that let outside designers from Yohji Yamamoto to Pharrell Williams rework adidas silhouettes rather than simply decorating them.
Construction
A moulded shoe is a different object to a stitched one. The outer is formed as a single piece, so there are no seams to fail and no panels to separate, but there is also no way to adjust fit through lacing tension in the way a conventional upper allows. Cut outs in the shell reduce weight and let the inner layer show through, which is where the grey does its work against the white outer. adidas has stitched Three Stripes on for reinforcement since 1952, and part of the interest here is seeing what happens when there is nothing to stitch them to. Foam takes scuffs as dents rather than scratches, and white foam discolours in sunlight.
