adidas has been making slip on footwear since long before anyone called it lifestyle, because athletes needed something to wear between the pitch and the shower. The Adimule takes that logic somewhere odd: a mule, a shoe with a real upper and no heel counter to speak of, aimed at people who want the look of a trainer with the commitment of a slide. Dark Brown Gum is the colourway that makes it make sense. Brown pulls it away from pool sandal territory and towards something you would wear with clothes, and the gum tone underneath gives it the warm, slightly retro base that Originals uses when it wants a shoe to look lived in. It is a strange object worn confidently.
Two ways. First, deliberately casual: cropped wide trousers or loose shorts, a heavyweight tee, and a visible crew sock, which turns the backless shape into a choice rather than laziness. Second, warmer: dark brown or olive relaxed trousers with a knit, letting the gum sole tie into the palette. Ideal for commuting short distances, home to cafe, airport lounges and anything where you take shoes off often. Mules run generous, so go true and expect a loose heel by design. Keep the upper dry, wipe the gum sole often because gum picks up grime and darkens permanently, and do not machine wash: the unstructured heel loses shape when soaked.
adidas found its second life through adoption rather than design, from the Superstar being taken up wholesale by hip hop to the Stan Smith becoming the base layer of European casual dressing. The mule and the slide belong to the current version of that story, where the most worn shoes are the ones that ask least of you. Originals, marked by the Trefoil since it was designed in 1971 for the Munich Olympics, has spent years turning athletic convenience into fashion, and backless footwear is where that goes next. It reads as confidence: choosing a shoe that cannot be run in is a statement about the pace of your day.
A mule succeeds or fails on the collar. Without a heel counter holding you in, the upper has to grip across the instep, and adidas builds these with a wrapped, structured forefoot so your foot stays put as you walk rather than slapping loose. The gum toned sole is soft enough for indoor and short outdoor use and gives more grip on smooth floors than a slick rubber compound would. Dark Brown across the upper hides scuffing, which matters on a shoe that gets kicked on and off constantly. There is no locked down fit here and there is not meant to be. Judge it as a shoe you can leave by the door and step into without looking down.
