The track top is the piece that carried adidas out of the stadium and into everyday wardrobes, and this Chinese Track Top 3.1 is a regional read on that idea in a flat, saturated blue. Adolf Dassler built the company in Herzogenaurach around purpose built kit for individual events, and he registered adidas AG on 18 August 1949 after the split with his brother Rudolf. Three years later he bought the Three Stripes trademark from Finnish maker Karhu Sports for two bottles of whisky and the equivalent of about 1,600 euros, then started calling adidas the three stripes company. That is the mark you are buying here. The gender neutral cut and the Asia sizing tell you this was drawn for a specific market rather than translated into it.
Blue is the easy one. Zip it fully over a plain white tee with black straight leg trousers and white leather sneakers, and let the jacket be the only colour in the outfit. For the second look, wear it half zipped over a grey hoodie with loose black denim and a cap, which is the casual read rather than the sport one. It works across a wide temperature band, as a mid layer under a coat in winter and on its own through spring evenings. Wash cold and hang dry, since synthetic track fabrics hold their shape and colour far better without heat, and a tumble dryer is what dulls a saturated blue fastest. adidas entered culture twice, once through sport and once through music it never paid for. Run-DMC put out My Adidas on 29 May 1986, and at Madison Square Garden that July they had thousands of people hold their adidas in the air, which produced the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. The tracksuit was the uniform that came with it. In Europe the same pieces became the base layer of football terrace and casual dressing. Treat the details you can see as the brief: a full length zip, a stand collar, and the Three Stripes running the arm. On adidas the stripes are not decoration by origin, they were stitched on to reinforce the upper of a shoe, and the same logic reads on a jacket, since the banding sits where a sleeve takes the most stress. The blue is a solid ground colour rather than a print, so the stripe contrast does all the visual work and the piece stays clean at distance. Asia sizing runs closer to the body than European or US grading, so if you want the loose track top shape rather than a fitted one, take a size up.
