Released on 14 April 2025 and part of the Handball line. This release has a suede upper in Night Indigo/Cloud White/Chalk White. Night Indigo is a deep, ink toned blue, and on the Handball Spezial it does something specific: it takes a shoe named after an indoor court sport and dresses it for the evening. The Spezial name is adidas at its most literal, a shoe made for one game rather than for a category, which is the founding instinct of the company. Adolf Dassler started out building shoes for individual athletic events in Herzogenaurach, and the company still names product after the room it was meant for. The Handball Spezial now lives under adidas Originals, marked by the Trefoil, the three leaves over three stripes designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, which carried the brand until 1997 and now signals heritage product.
Utility
Deep indigo behaves like navy with more attitude, so it takes tailoring better than most sports shoes. Wear it with charcoal wool trousers and a cream crewneck for a smart casual read, or with raw denim, a grey zip up and a canvas jacket for the everyday one. Avoid pairing it directly with mid blue denim, where the two tones fight. Influence
The Spezial silhouettes travelled the same road the Superstar and the Stan Smith did, out of the sports hall and into the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing. That is the recurring adidas story: a shoe designed for a narrow athletic purpose gets adopted by people who never played the sport, and the brand ends up with a second life it did not design. The Superstar version of this happened through hip hop after Run-DMC, and the indoor court shape is now read as a style choice rather than as equipment, which is why a deep indigo pair makes complete sense on a street where nobody is playing handball.
Construction
Read this as an indoor court shoe and everything follows: low profile, flat sole geometry, a narrow last that holds the foot for lateral movement rather than for straight line running, and the Three Stripes carrying the midfoot. On adidas those stripes started life as reinforcement sewn onto the upper, and on a court shoe that is not a historical footnote, since the banding sits where a foot loads sideways. The Night Indigo upper is dark enough that seams and stripe stitching read as texture rather than as contrast, so the shoe looks like a single object from a distance.
