Released on 17 May 2025 and part of the Handball line. This release has a suede upper in Wonder Mauve/Off White/Gum. Wonder Mauve is the Handball Spezial recast as something closer to a fashion object than a sports relic. The model was built for indoor handball, a sport played on wooden courts where sharp direction changes matter more than cushioning, and it was then absorbed into British terrace dressing, where obscure European sports shoes became status objects precisely because they were hard to get hold of. A soft, dusty mauve is nothing like the colours that scene originally chased, which is what makes it interesting. Style code KJ6305. It takes a shoe whose entire history is about knowing the references and puts it in a colour that requires no knowledge at all to like.
Utility
Mauve sits between neutral and colour, so it works where a plain shoe would be dull. Grey trousers with a white tee and a navy jacket lets it act as a soft accent, and cream or ecru head to toe turns it into part of a tonal outfit rather than a highlight. Avoid strong pinks and reds nearby, which make the mauve look faded rather than deliberate. The Spezial runs narrow and low with almost no cushioning, so half size up if your foot is wide. Waterproof the suede before wearing it, brush it after every outing, keep it out of rain entirely, and never dry it near heat, which will stiffen and blotch the nap.
Influence
adidas keeps two cultural registers running at once. Construction
Suede is what makes a colour like mauve work. In coated leather a dusty pink purple would look synthetic, but suede absorbs dye and diffuses light, so the tone reads soft and slightly powdery instead. The Spezial build stays as it always is: a low narrow last, minimal padding, stitched Three Stripes running through the sidewall as structure, and a gum rubber outsole inherited from the indoor court, which grips dry ground well and wet tile badly. There is very little between your foot and the pavement. Pale suede is the most demanding finish adidas sells, since water marks it permanently and dirt sits in the nap rather than on the surface, so protection before first wear is not optional.
