The track top is the piece of adidas clothing that escaped sport most completely. Built originally as a warm-up layer, it became terrace uniform, band uniform and eventually just a jacket, carried entirely by the Three Stripes running down the sleeve. The CTT, the Chinese Track Top, is the cut built for a specific market with its own proportions and detailing rather than a global template. Sauce Purple is a deep, slightly muddy violet, not a bright one, which suits a garment that works best when the stripes rather than the body colour do the announcing. adidas has been in this category since the days it was outfitting athletes rather than selling to them.
Purple is a colour that wants restraint elsewhere. First recipe: black tapered trousers or straight denim with a plain white tee under the open jacket, so the sleeve stripes carry the outfit and nothing competes. Second: grey sweatpants and a black crew for a full leisure build where the purple is the only saturated element. Track tops fit close through the body by design, so size up if you want the relaxed drape rather than the original athletic cut. Wash cold, hang dry and avoid fabric softener, which flattens the face of tricot fabrics and dulls the colour over time.
The track top is where adidas branding became clothing rather than sportswear, adopted by European terrace culture and by musicians who liked that the Three Stripes read from a distance. That mark was bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 rather than invented, and it became the brand's whole language. The clearest proof of how far it travelled came in 1986, when Run-DMC released My Adidas without payment and had a Madison Square Garden crowd hold their shoes up, leading to the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. Track tops rode the same wave, worn on stage as often as at a warm-up.
A tricot or knit-faced track jacket with a full-length zip, a stand or ribbed collar and the Three Stripes running the length of each sleeve, where they function as the garment's entire visual system. Track top fabrics are smooth-faced synthetics chosen for drape rather than warmth, so this is a layering piece across three seasons rather than a coat. Deep purple synthetics hold colour well but are prone to shine if pressed with a hot iron, so wash cool, hang dry and never tumble on high heat. Zip the jacket before washing to protect the teeth and the sleeve stripes, and store it hanging so the shoulders keep their line.
