Culture Note™
Released on 1 April 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a mesh upper in Cardboard/Chalk White/Brown Desert. Cardboard is one of the Samba colourways that made people who never cared about football trainers care about this one. The Samba was built for footballers training on frozen ground, which dictated the flat sole, the slim last and the direct ground feel, and the OG designation means those archival proportions rather than a modernised version. Cardboard swaps the usual bright white leather for a warm, slightly dusty off white that sits closer to raw paper than to a sports shoe, and pairs it with a gum outsole. That single move takes the temperature of the whole shoe down. It reads as something worn in rather than newly bought, which is the reason it worked as well as it did.
Recipe one: ecru or off white wide leg trousers with a brown suede jacket, a tonal warm outfit where the shoe is the lightest note and the gum sole ties to the leather above. Recipe two: mid wash denim with an olive overshirt, where Cardboard stops the palette going cold the way a bright white shoe would. The Samba last is narrow and long, so a half size down suits slim feet and the leather widens rather than lengthens with wear. Flat soles and minimal cushioning make this a going out shoe rather than an all day standing one. Keep the suede dry, brush it with a crepe brush, and use an eraser sponge on the gum sole before it turns grey.
The Samba's move from football training to everyday wear was made by wearers, not by marketing, which is how most of adidas's cultural position was built. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and the brand's biggest single cultural moment was unpaid: Run-DMC released My Adidas and had a Madison Square Garden crowd hold their shell toes in the air before any deal existed, producing the first endorsement between a musical act and an athletic company. Cardboard belongs to the wave that made the Samba ubiquitous again, and its neutrality is exactly why it spread so far.
Leather upper, suede T shaped toe overlay and a gum rubber outsole is the Samba formula, and the OG keeps every part of it. The suede toe is functional history: it protects the area a footballer destroys first, the same instinct that put a moulded rubber shell toe on the Superstar in 1969 to protect players' feet under the basket. The Three Stripes are stitched through the sidewall where they reinforce the panels, a structural role the mark has had since adidas bought it from Karhu Sports in 1952. In Cardboard the leather, the overlays and the gum sole all sit in the same warm family, so contrast comes from texture rather than colour. There is almost no stack height, so the ride is flat and firm.
