Collegiate burgundy is the most grown up colour adidas puts on the Samba. It is a deep, slightly brown red that reads closer to wine than to sport, and on a silhouette this flat and plain it turns the shoe into something you could wear with tailoring without anyone reading it as sportswear. adidas has kept the Samba alive by doing exactly this, leaving the architecture untouched and changing only the surface, which works because the shape itself was settled long ago. The Three Stripes carry across the quarter as they have since Adi Dassler bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952 and started calling adidas the three stripes company.
Burgundy is a neutral if you treat it as one. Wear it with charcoal wool trousers and a cream shirt for a smart casual outfit that stays deliberately unsporty, or with dark indigo jeans and a camel overcoat where the shoe picks up the warmth in the coat. Avoid pairing it with bright reds, which fight rather than complement. Size a half down for narrow feet as this shape runs long. Keep the suede toe dry and brushed, condition the leather occasionally so the deep colour does not dull, and clean marks promptly since burgundy dye can lift if you scrub it wet and hard.

Burgundy leather over the main panels with a suede overlay at the toe and contrast Three Stripes running the length of the quarter, on the low flat outsole this shape has always used. Dark saturated leather is forgiving in daily use, hiding scuffs that a white upper would broadcast, though creases across the vamp still catch light and show as pale lines once the finish has flexed. The build gives you very little cushioning and a low stance, so ground feel is high and long standing days are hard. Burgundy also shifts noticeably under different light, looking almost brown in daylight and nearly black indoors.
