Released on 13 June 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Off White/Core Black. This is the Samba at its most archetypal, and the small word doing the work is Off. Not bright white but off white, a slightly warm, slightly aged base that reads as a shoe already broken in, cut with Core Black across the stripes and heel. Bright white makes the silhouette look new and slightly clinical. Off white makes it look like something pulled from a locker, which is closer to what an indoor football shoe was ever meant to be. If you only ever own one pair from the family, this is the configuration that carries the shape with the least noise and dates the slowest.
This is the pair you stop thinking about. Straight leg indigo denim, a white tee and a navy or olive jacket is the obvious fit and the right one. For something sharper, grey wool trousers with a black knit lets the off white sit as the only warm tone in the outfit and dresses the shoe up further than it has any right to go. Short white or grey socks, never black. The sole is thin and gives no arch support, so keep it for city days rather than long standing. Wipe the leather weekly, brush the suede toe dry, and let the gum sole age rather than scrubbing it.
The Samba became a global default without a campaign asking it to. That is the same route the Superstar and Stan Smith took to becoming the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and it is why the Trefoil, drawn in 1971 for the Munich Games, now marks lifestyle product rather than performance. The problem with a default is that it stops saying anything. Off white and black is the version that survives that problem best, because it is the configuration people were wearing long before the current wave, and it will still look correct when the wave passes and the beige pairs start looking dated.
An off white leather body takes the black stitched Three Stripes and black heel patch, with the suede toe overlay stitched across the front in the same dark tone, which is where a footballer scuffs hardest and where the Samba gets its recognisable nose. Sewing the stripes through the panel is a habit adidas kept from 1952, when it bought the mark from Karhu Sports and used the stripes to reinforce the upper. The gum outsole underneath is thin, flat and made for grip on a hard indoor floor. An off white base is more forgiving than bright white because it hides early greying, but it also cannot be bleached back, so clean gently and often.
