Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 10 February 2024 as part of the Stan Smith line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Cloud White/Off White. The Stan Smith is one of the two shoes that turned adidas into everyday clothing rather than sports equipment, and putting BAPE's ABC camo on it is a collision of two very different kinds of ubiquity. One is a plain white tennis shoe that became a default across Europe. The other is a camouflage pattern that became shorthand for a whole era of Japanese streetwear. adidas has been running partnerships like this longer than anyone, having effectively invented the designer sneaker collaboration, and the Stan Smith works as a canvas precisely because it has so little going on underneath the print.
A patterned shoe is a loud shoe, so treat it as the only pattern present. Plain black trousers with a plain white tee lets the camo carry everything, or washed grey sweatpants and a black hoodie for a softer street read where the print is the only texture. Never pair with camo clothing. The Stan Smith fits long and flat, so a half size down works for most, and a thicker sock helps if you are between sizes. Clean gently with a barely damp cloth and no solvents, since printed and dyed uppers lose colour quickly under aggressive cleaning, and store the pair out of direct sunlight so the camo does not fade unevenly.
The Stan Smith and the Superstar together became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, which is the transformation that made adidas Originals a business rather than an archive. Camo prints on that silhouette work because they subvert something people stopped looking at. adidas has a long record of handing its heritage shapes to outside partners, from Yohji Yamamoto and Stella McCartney to Jeremy Scott and Alexander Wang, and the results are judged on whether the underlying shape still reads. Here it does, which is the point.
The Stan Smith's build is deliberately minimal: a clean leather upper with perforated Three Stripes rather than stitched ones, a low flat outsole and almost no visible hardware. Applying an all over camo across that surface changes the read completely while leaving the architecture untouched, which is how adidas usually structures collaborations on its heritage shoes. Expect the pattern to sit across the main panels with the heel and tongue carrying the branding. Patterned uppers are harder to clean than plain ones, since scrubbing lifts print as well as dirt, and the low unpadded sole gives you the same flat, close stance the shoe has always had.
