Released on 12 October 2022 and part of the adiFOM Q line. This release has a eva upper in Grey Four/Grey Three/Grey Two. The Adifom Q is adidas building a shoe as a single sculpted object rather than as an assembly of upper, midsole and outsole, and the all grey execution is the version that treats it purely as form. Colour blocking is how sportswear normally explains a shoe to you, telling your eye which part is what. Remove it entirely and you are left with a silhouette that has to justify itself on line and volume alone. That is a confident thing to release from a company that has more recognisable logos than almost anyone, and it fits a streak in adidas history that includes the adidas 1 of 2005, marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe with a microprocessor performing five million calculations a second.
Two ways. Tonal and technical: grey cargo trousers, a charcoal shell jacket, a grey ribbed sock, and the shoe becomes the base of a monochrome fit. Or soft contrast: cream or ecru wide trousers with a brown knit, where grey keeps the palette from going too warm. Right for summer, travel days, quick errands and anywhere you take shoes on and off. Wrong for long distances, wet stone and any evening that involves standing on a slick floor. Foam moulds fit generously and give slightly with heat and wear, so size for a snug rather than loose feel at the opening. Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, avoid solvents which can mark foam, and never dry it near a heater or leave it in a hot car.
Foam footwear became acceptable because the culture around dressing loosened, and the interesting move adidas made was refusing to treat it as a purely functional category. The Adifom is styled, not just comfortable. The brand's usual cultural pattern is adoption after the fact, the Superstar picked up by hip hop, the terrace shoes taken up by football casuals, but here adidas is trying to set the terms rather than follow them. A fully tonal grey version is the collector's read of that: no contrast, no logo colour play, just the shape, which is the version people who care about industrial design will choose.
One material, one mould. Without panels and stitching, everything is decided at the tooling stage: where the foam thickens for support, where it thins for flex, and how the opening holds your foot without laces. That makes the fit consistent from pair to pair but non adjustable, so trying it on matters more than with a laced shoe. Grey on grey removes every visual cue about which surface is structural and which is decorative, and it also happens to be the most practical finish in the range, because a mid grey hides scuffing and street dust far better than white does while avoiding the heat absorption of black in summer.
