Released on 14 September 2022 and part of the Adilette 22 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Carbon/Aluminium/Aluminium. The Adilette 22 is the slide redrawn as something closer to an object than a sandal, with a thick sculpted footbed, an exaggerated profile and a monolithic single-material look. Carbon Aluminium keeps it in cold industrial greys, dark and pale, which suits a design whose whole argument is form rather than colour. adidas has never been shy about turning a functional product into a shape statement: the same company marketed the adidas 1 in 2005 as the world's first intelligent shoe and put splayed blades under springblade instead of foam. The 22 does that in the most humble category the brand sells.
Two ways in. First, off-duty athletic: grey or black sweats with thick crew socks, using the raised footbed for recovery after training or long days on your feet. Second, warm weather minimalist: wide black or stone linen trousers with a plain tee, where the sculpted grey slide is the only structural element in a soft outfit. The 22 fits differently to a standard Adilette because the bridge is fixed and the footbed contoured, so try before committing if you have a high instep. Rinse after water use, wipe the platform edge regularly, and dry away from heat so the moulding holds its shape.
adidas has two histories running in parallel, one of athletic problem solving from Adi Dassler watching competitors in Herzogenaurach, and one of design experiment aimed squarely at how a product looks. Slides sit unusually in that split: they are pure utility objects that the brand has repeatedly restyled as fashion. The reach of the Three Stripes, a mark bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 rather than invented, is what lets a slide carry brand recognition without a single word on it. The 22 is that logic taken to its conclusion, a shape that identifies itself before you see any branding.
A moulded one-piece build with a heavily contoured footbed, a raised heel edge and a thick platform, which is what gives the 22 its distinctive stance. There is no adjustable strap, so fit comes entirely from the moulded bridge and the length of the footbed. Grey moulded materials show scuffing more than black does, especially along the platform edge, so wipe them regularly with a damp cloth and mild soap rather than letting marks build. Rinse after pool or beach use because salt and chlorine degrade synthetics over time. Air dry away from direct sun and heat, which can warp a moulded footbed permanently.
