Dark Mocha is the colourway that proved the Air Jordan 1 no longer needs a team to justify a palette. Deep coffee brown over sail with black weight, it is closer to a pair of boots than to a basketball uniform, and it became one of the most requested high top makeups of the modern retro era for exactly that reason. The silhouette is unchanged from Peter Moore's design with Bruce Kilgore, built for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 with a royalty deal written in, and released to the public on 1 April 1985 after the first 50,000 pairs sold out. The high cut is the original proposition, and brown is what happens when it stops answering to a jersey.
This is the Jordan 1 that works with grown up clothing. Recipe one: charcoal wool trousers, a cream knit and a brown suede jacket, an outfit where the shoe is the least surprising thing in it. Recipe two: raw indigo denim, a white tee and a black leather jacket, where the mocha keeps the fit from going cold. Brown, cream or black socks, and never bright white against the sail panels. High cut wants a trouser that breaks just above the collar. Autumn and winter is the natural season, but keep them out of rain since sail panels water spot and dark brown leather dries pale until it is conditioned back.
Brown Jordans are a product of the fashion crossover that the brand's collaboration programme opened up, running through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. Once the silhouette had been shown alongside tailoring, palettes borrowed from menswear stopped feeling odd on it. Jordan Brand has been a Nike division since 1997 and generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike by 2022, and a large share of that comes from colour rather than technology. The 1's original credit still sits underneath everything: Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, records by 2Pac to Jay-Z, and a resale market valued around 2 billion dollars.
Leather upper with the dark mocha on toe cap, ankle panel and heel, sail across the quarter and collar, and black used at the base to ground the whole thing. Three warm tones stacked like this depend on the leather taking dye evenly, so panel to panel consistency is what you are looking at when you inspect a pair. The high collar is stiff before it is comfortable and softens over a week or two of wear. Flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle underneath, firm and direct. Sail is a cream white, and it yellows with heat and sun, so keep them out of window light and away from radiators when drying.
