Designed by Peter Moore and released on 30 August 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Stealth/White. Stealth takes the shape that started everything and drains the colour out of it. The Air Jordan 1 was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, produced for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and put on sale to the public on 1 April 1985, after Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie to a six year deal worth about 2.5 million dollars and gave him a royalty on every pair. Nike hoped for roughly 3 million dollars over three years. The first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million dollars. In High OG trim you get the original proportions back: the tall collar, the full Wings logo on the panel, the long ankle. Stealth greys the whole thing down so the silhouette, not the colour blocking, does the talking.
Grey is the easy one. Run them with raw indigo denim and a heavy white tee so the shoe reads as texture, not as a statement, and let the tall collar sit under a slight stack rather than over the hem. For a sharper version, go charcoal wide leg trousers, a black knit and no other colour on you at all, which is where the tonal palette pays off. Lace all the way for the true 1985 stance or leave the top two eyelets loose if you want the collar to fold. Fit runs long and narrow, so try a half size down unless you have a wide foot. Brush greys dry before they set, keep them out of rain, and never store the pair squashed flat because that collar holds its shape by memory.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned sneakers into a collecting culture. Spike Lee directed the early advertising and played Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, putting the shoe into film language rather than sports marketing. The Banned campaign was built around the NBA uniform rule requiring shoes at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited being the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the 1 released, with Nike paying the 5,000 dollar per game fine instead of redesigning. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordans into their verses. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and this High OG carries that lineage in a colourway that asks for nothing.
This is the pre Air generation of the line. Nike Air cushioning only entered the series with the Air Jordan II, so the 1 rides on a stitched rubber cupsole and a plain foam bed, which is why it feels flat, firm and close to the ground compared with anything later. The High OG cut runs the collar above the ankle with the padded tongue and full length lacing that Moore drew for a basketball floor in 1984. The Wings logo sits at the collar rather than the Jumpman, marking the earliest era of the brand. A tonal grey execution hides creasing better than white does, and the low slung cupsole means these break in by softening rather than by cushioning.
