The Air Jordan 1 was built for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, and released to the public on 1 April 1985 as a basketball shoe with a red, black and white uniform problem attached. Four decades of retros later, the pattern has been recoloured into almost every register available, and ashen slate is the coolest of them: a soft grey blue that belongs to interiors and knitwear rather than to a Bulls jersey. Quiet colourways are the reason this silhouette outlasted its own hype cycle. The model built the modern resale market, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the wider market it anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, but the shoes that get worn daily are the ones nobody photographs. The line's cultural reach came from Spike Lee's early advertising, where Lee played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and from hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put the shoes into verses. Later, collaborators including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Comme des Garcons, Dior and Travis Scott all chose this same pattern to work on.
Cutting the Jordan 1 low removes the ankle collar and with it the Wings logo of the line's earliest era, leaving the swoosh, the toe box shape and the panel seams to carry recognition. Ashen slate is a desaturated tone, which means it reads differently under daylight and artificial light and pairs cleanly with white, cream, navy and black without competing. Muted greys and blues hide crease shadows better than saturated colours but show water marks more, so the finish matters.
