Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 October 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Purple Venom/Black/White. Purple has never been a Jordan colour in the way red, black and white have, and that is the appeal. Black with Purple Venom takes Peter Moore's original panel geometry, drawn with Bruce Kilgore before the shoe reached the public on 1 April 1985, and runs a high voltage purple through it against a dark base. The Low cut keeps it below the ankle, so it wears like a shoe rather than a statement piece. What you get is the most recognisable silhouette in sneakers in a palette it has no historical claim to, which is precisely how the Air Jordan 1 has stayed relevant: the shape is fixed, the colour is a variable.
One bright colour, everything else flat. Recipe one: black straight leg jeans, a black tee, a grey overshirt, so the purple is the only colour anywhere and reads as deliberate. Recipe two: washed grey sweats with a white tee for a summer weekend, where the purple lifts an otherwise dull palette. Do not add a purple garment: the shoe stops being the accent and becomes a theme. True to size for most, half up if wide. Black leather wipes clean easily with a damp cloth and mild soap. Keep the purple panels out of long direct sun, and use shoe trees to slow the toe crease.
The Air Jordan 1's cultural power came from breaking rules in public. The NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and carried a 5,000 dollar per game fine, and Nike paid rather than redesign, building the Banned campaign around it and teaching the sneaker market that transgression sells. That lesson is why off palette colourways still land. Around it sat Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and a run of hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z. The model went on to make sneaker collecting a mass activity, anchoring a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars.
Dark base with a single bright accent is the most durable blocking the Air Jordan 1 offers. Black carries the toe, quarter and heel counter, so scuffs and creasing stay quiet, while Purple Venom lands on the Swoosh and accents where it can be seen without dominating. That split also ages well: the black will look the same for years while the purple holds saturation as long as you keep it out of long sunlight. Style code 553560 505 identifies this pair. The Low sits below the ankle bone, which means it breaks in quickly and flexes with a normal stride instead of bracing the way the High does.
