Culture Note™
Black with University Blue is a two reference colourway. The blue belongs to North Carolina, the university Jordan played for and one of the college basketball programmes the brand still outfits alongside Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. The black is the brand's own. Putting them together on a Low takes both references out of the arena and into a shoe you can wear without ceremony, which is what the Low cut has always been for. The silhouette itself is unchanged from the 1985 original that Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, the shoe that sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars against a projection of about 3 million.
Two ways to run it. First, black straight leg jeans with a light blue oxford shirt, so the shirt and the swoosh answer each other and the rest stays dark. Second, grey sweatpants and a black bomber, using the blue as the only colour in a fully neutral fit. Lows suit hot weather, long walking days and cropped hems, and this palette is workwear friendly in a way a red pair is not. Lace it properly since a Low offers no ankle support. Clean the blue sections gently, dry brush the black, and keep the pair out of standing water during monsoon.
The 1 is the shoe that created sneaker collecting as a mass activity. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market the model anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, with several billion more projected. That market exists because Nike's earliest advertising, directed by Spike Lee with Lee on screen as Mars Blackmon, and hip hop's constant citation of the shoes by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, made a basketball shoe into a status object. University Blue is the collegiate end of that story rather than the professional one.
The Low removes the collar above the ankle, so the panel structure is compressed into a shorter upper and every seam counts for more. Black across the main panels with University Blue on the swoosh and heel gives you high contrast in a small area, which is why this colourway reads sharp from a distance rather than muddy. The dark base is the practical half: it takes scuffs, dust and daily wear far better than a pale pair, while the blue stays clean because it sits on the sections least likely to touch the ground. Brush the black weekly since dust flattens it, keep the blue away from dye transfer, and let the pair air out fully between wears.
