Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 July 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Copa/Black. Copa is a warm, pale tone, and putting it on a golf build of the Air Jordan 1 Low tells you where this brand's audience actually is. Since becoming a standalone division inside Nike in 1997, Jordan Brand has signed athletes far outside basketball, including NFL players Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott and MLB players Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter, and it has taken its most famous silhouette onto grass. The shape is still the 1985 drawing by Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore, cut below the ankle. What changes is the surface it is built for: turf, slope and a long walking round rather than a hardwood cut.
Two ways to wear it. First, on the course with stone or white golf trousers and a soft polo, a tonal warm palette where the shoe finishes the look instead of interrupting it. Second, off the course with cream linen trousers and a plain tee for warm weather, since a Low in a neutral tone passes anywhere casual. Wear proper socks and lace it firmly, since a Low gives no ankle support on uneven ground. Treat and re treat the upper through the season, brush dry grass off before it dries in, and keep this pair well away from monsoon conditions entirely.
Golf is where a lot of this brand's original audience ended up, and the shoe followed. Jordan Brand's expansion beyond basketball is well documented: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016, and sponsor of Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club. The cultural authority still traces back to Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and to hip hop's citation of the shoes. A pale golf Low is the calmest possible expression of all that: recognisable to anyone who grew up on the line, invisible to a dress code.
A golf Low is a walking shoe first. The cut below the ankle gives you free flex through a swing and through four hours on foot, while the build underneath is set up for traction and stability on grass rather than for court movement. The pale copa upper is the risk in that equation: grass stains, wet soil and dew all mark light colours fast, and a golf course is the least forgiving place to wear one. Protect the upper thoroughly before the first round and reapply through the season. Clean turf out of the outsole immediately after play, dry the pair slowly away from any heat source, and never leave them in a hot car boot.
