Designed by Peter Moore and released on 21 August 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Pollen. Pollen puts a saturated yellow across the 1 Low with black on the toe, Swoosh and collar, a combination that has nothing to do with Chicago and everything to do with the model's usefulness as a colour platform. That flexibility is earned. The shoe's original run of 50,000 pairs sold out and the model passed 150 million dollars in sales against a plan for three million over three years, which bought the silhouette the permanence it now trades on. The Low takes that same panel arrangement and drops the collar, turning a court shoe into something closer to a canvas trainer in profile. In yellow it reads as summer footwear rather than sportswear heritage.
Two clean routes. Light wash denim shorts with a white tee lets the yellow act as the only colour, which is what it wants. Or wear it with black wide leg trousers and a black tee so the shoe becomes a single bright break at the floor. Do not pair with yellow or orange clothing. No show or low socks suit the cut; crew socks in white are fine, coloured ones are not. Keep it away from rain and grass, since yellow marks permanently. Clean after each wear with a damp cloth, use a foam cleaner on the midsole, and store in a box away from direct light to slow fading.
The 1 Low's ubiquity comes from a model that has been in culture since Spike Lee played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan in Nike's advertising and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z made the shoe part of their vocabulary. Bright general releases like this one are how that history reaches people who were never buying at retail on release day. They are also the volume end of a resale economy valued around 2 billion dollars, where the rarest pairs from 1985 have reached about 20,000 dollars on StockX and a colourway like Pollen stays gettable.
The Low's build is straightforward, and that is the appeal: stitched toe cap, eyestay, quarter panel and Swoosh over a flat rubber cupsole, with no cushioning window because Nike Air only entered the line from the Air Jordan 2. Perforations sit across the toe box. Yellow is the least forgiving colour in footwear because it shows every mark and cannot be bleached back, so this is a dry weather shoe. The black panels give you edges to clean against, which helps: work the brush toward the seam rather than across it so dirt does not push into the yellow. Expect the midsole to warm in tone with sun exposure.
