Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Tech Grey/Light Orewood Brown/White/Sail. Inside Out is a design idea rather than a colourway: the shoe is presented as if turned through itself, showing the parts of a construction that are normally hidden. That trick only works on a silhouette everyone already knows by heart, which the Air Jordan 1 has been since it sold out its first 50,000 pairs after releasing to the public on 1 April 1985. Craft in the name signals a material driven special edition, and Tech Grey keeps the whole exercise neutral enough to read as engineering rather than as costume. The pattern underneath is still the one Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, which is exactly why you can invert its presentation and still recognise it instantly.
A deconstructed shoe wants finished clothes around it. First: sharp black trousers with a clean hem, a plain grey knit, a well cut coat, so the roughness at the floor looks intentional. Second: raw denim and a heavy white tee, which is the plainest possible frame for a shoe doing something unusual. Avoid distressed or frayed clothing, since two deconstruction ideas in one outfit cancel each other. Keep these out of rain, because exposed edges absorb water and dry slowly. Brush gently along the edges rather than across them, use foam only on flat panels, never pick at loose threads, and store them upright with trees.
Deconstruction as a design language entered sneakers through the brand's collaboration programme, most visibly with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, and the partner list around it runs through Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. In house Craft editions apply the same thinking without an external name on the box. That the Air Jordan 1 can survive being turned inside out and still register as itself is the strongest evidence of how deeply the shape is fixed in public memory, a memory built by Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon campaigns, by hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and by the collecting market the model created.
The point of this execution is that construction becomes the decoration. The Air Jordan 1 is assembled from separated panels, toe cap, quarter and heel counter, and an inside out treatment puts the seams, edges and internal surfaces on display instead of tucking them away. That means the parts you would normally never inspect are now the parts people look at, so uneven wear shows up faster than on a conventional pair. Nike Air entered the line at the Air Jordan 2, so this remains flat and firm underfoot. Tech grey across exposed surfaces is practical, since mid value greys tolerate dust better than either extreme, but exposed edges will fray before flat panels scuff.
