Sky J Purple is a light, airy purple, and the naming tells you where it belongs: the Sky J range sits in the softer, more fashion led part of the Air Jordan 1 Low programme rather than in the retro line. The silhouette is Peter Moore's, designed with Bruce Kilgore for a Chicago Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, produced for him that November and sold publicly from 1 April 1985. Purple never featured in the Chicago palette that became Jordan Brand's house colours alongside the number 23, which is why colours like this land on the Low, where the shape can stand alone without a story propping it up.
Two fits. Light and easy: white or stone trousers, a white tee, and a light denim shirt worn open, so the purple reads as a soft accent in a bright palette. Or ground it: black jeans, a grey crewneck, and a black jacket, where the light purple becomes the single colour in a dark fit. Lows want no visible sock and sit fine under a full hem. Order your normal size, allowing for a wide toe box and a close midfoot. Keep the midsole white with a soft brush, spot clean the purple leather rather than soaking it, and store out of direct sun so the tone holds.
Jordan Brand's move into softer, non team colour is the commercial half of a much larger expansion. It became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016, sponsored Paris Saint Germain as its first association football club in 2018, and reached about 5.1 billion dollars in revenue for Nike by 2022. None of that is the Chicago Bulls. A pale purple Air Jordan 1 Low is what the brand looks like once it stops being a basketball company: a silhouette people recognise instantly, coloured for a wardrobe, sold to someone who may never watch a game.
A leather upper cut below the ankle bone, on the standard Air Jordan 1 Low panel set: perforated toe box, mudguard, eyestay and heel counter, over a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle. Light purple is a mid difficulty finish, easier than white but still prone to dulling in sun and showing dirt along the mudguard, which on a Low sits closest to the ground. The white midsole is what gives the colour its lift, so a grey sole flattens the whole shoe. Brush dry first, use mild soap on a soft cloth, and keep the pair away from dark denim in the early weeks.
