Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 September 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Cacao Wow/Luminous Green/Ale Brown/Twine/Sail/Geode Teal. Cacao Wow is a warm milk chocolate brown, and putting it on the Air Jordan 1 Mid gives you the most wearable version of a colour the archive almost never used. The Mid is the cut that made this silhouette an everyday shoe: collar height between the OG high and the low, padded rather than stiff, no break in ritual required. That accessibility is why the Mid carries the brand's more adventurous colour, since the buyer is dressing rather than collecting. The shape underneath is still Peter Moore's work with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, a design that outsold every internal projection and then became the foundation for a whole design series under Tinker Hatfield.
Cacao is the sneaker equivalent of a brown boot, so treat it that way. Recipe one: cream heavyweight trousers, a chocolate knit and a tan jacket, a fully tonal outfit where the shoe closes the loop. Recipe two: black jeans, a white tee and a brown suede jacket, where the brown at the foot answers the brown at the shoulder and stops the black from flattening everything. Brown or cream socks, and never white, which will make the leather look dull. The Mid collar wants a hem that breaks just above it. This is a proper autumn and winter shoe, comfortable for long days, though heavy rain will water spot brown leather until it is conditioned back.
Brown became a Jordan colour through the brand's fashion crossover rather than through basketball. The collaboration programme, running through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, taught the market that these silhouettes belong next to tailoring and outerwear, not only next to jerseys. Jordan Brand has been a Nike division since 1997 with its own apparel line, and that apparel business is where earth tones were normalised first. The 1 itself still carries its original credit, an advertising campaign directed by Spike Lee in which he played Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, and a run of hip hop records that made it shorthand.
Leather upper with the cacao tone carried across the overlays and a lighter ground behind it, plus a padded mid height collar that folds comfortably from the first wear. Brown leather is the most forgiving finish in this catalogue: it takes scuffs as patina rather than damage, and a light leather cream once a season deepens the colour instead of just cleaning it. Flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle, firm and close to the ground, the ride the 1 has always run. The pale midsole is the weak point on a warm colourway, since a grey foxing tape makes rich brown look muddy, so keep a foam cleaner for it and use it early.
