Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Noble Red/White. Noble Red is a deeper, more contained red than the gym red of the founding Chicago scheme, and it arrives on the Mid in grade school sizing, which is where most people meet this shoe first. Red matters to this line more than any other colour: it was the colour Nike was pushing when it signed a Chicago Bulls rookie in October 1984, and it remains half of a palette that functions as brand identity without any logo attached. A darker, richer red keeps that association while removing the team reference, so the Mid becomes a shoe you can wear without appearing to declare an allegiance to a franchise you may never have watched.
Deep red behaves like a neutral if you treat it as one. First: black denim, a black tee, a grey or olive jacket, socks black, so the red reads as leather rather than as colour. Second: light grey sweats and a cream hood, letting the red be the only saturated thing in the fit. Do not pair with brighter reds or with burgundy, which flattens both. The Mid is the most practical cut for school runs, commuting and cooler evenings. Keep solvent away entirely, use foam sparingly on the upper, wipe the midsole separately with a damp cloth, and dry out of sunlight because saturated reds fade unevenly.
Red is the colour that carries this shoe's entire mythology, including the Banned advertising Nike built around the NBA's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white. The shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype worn before the Air Jordan 1 released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesign, a decision that taught the market transgression sells. Beyond marketing, the shoes moved through hip hop, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, and through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon campaigns. A darker red inherits that history at a lower volume.
The Mid collar covers the ankle bone without the height of a Retro High, and it uses a simpler panel arrangement, which is exactly why it works as a volume model rather than an archive reissue. A deep red across the upper unifies those panels instead of dividing them, so the shoe reads as one shape and the Swoosh does the only real drawing. Nike Air entered the signature line at the Air Jordan 2, so the platform here is flat and firm with no cushioning unit underfoot. Rich red dyes are the most solvent sensitive surfaces in this whole line, so anything stronger than a foam cleaner will pull colour before it pulls dirt. Brush dry first, always.
