Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 13 December 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Dark Concord/Taxi/White/Black. Purple and gold on an Air Jordan is a deliberate provocation, and the line has always worked this way. The house colours are Chicago red, black and white, along with the number 23, and the Jumpman is the mark that carries them. Peter Moore drew the original shoe with Bruce Kilgore, it reached the public on 1 April 1985, and everything since has been a variation on those panels. This Mid takes the shape into a rival city's palette, purple across the quarter and collar with gold detailing, a joke only a shoe this old is allowed to tell. The silhouette has outlived every team allegiance it was originally drawn to serve.
Two ways. Full commitment: black jeans, a purple or black crew, and gold hardware in your jewellery so the shoe's accents repeat above the waist. Or neutralise it: cream cargo pants and a white tee, letting purple and gold be the only saturated thing you own that day. Mids read best with a cuffed or cropped hem so the collar stays visible. Sizing runs close to true with a snug heel. Metallic gold panels want a dry microfibre cloth, not a wet brush, and purple leather shows water spotting, so keep them out of heavy rain and dry them slowly at room temperature if they do get soaked.
The Jumpman is the mark doing the work in gold on the tongue. Peter Moore had Jordan recreate a leaping pose in Bulls gear after seeing a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Summer Olympics, and the resulting silhouette became the house logo. Rentmeester sued Nike over it and the Ninth Circuit ruled in Nike's favour, finding the images not substantially similar. That logo now outranks the team it was born in, which is exactly why a purple and gold makeup works: the Jumpman is bigger than any jersey, and Jordan Brand has since carried it onto football, baseball and college programmes far from Chicago.
Leather and synthetic panels in purple over white, with gold accents placed where the eye lands, on the tongue mark and the collar trim. Metallic finishes behave differently to plain leather: they hold their shine but they mark, so the gold sections age faster than the purple around them. The mid height collar is padded and sits under the ankle bone, giving a snug wrap without the lockdown of the High. The cupsole is stitched rubber, wide and flat, built for standing rather than running. Nothing here is technical, which is the point: the Air Jordan 1 is a leather shoe with excellent proportions, and colour is the entire toolkit.
