Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 October 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Off Noir/White/Black/Black. Elephant print is the most recognisable material code Jordan has, and it did not start on this shoe. Tinker Hatfield introduced the grey cracked pattern on the Air Jordan III, the model where the line stopped being a single signature shoe and became a design series with a language of its own, and the print now signals the brand entirely on its own without a Jumpman anywhere in sight. Putting it on an Air Jordan 1 Mid in a black and white panda arrangement is a deliberate cross reference: the first silhouette wearing the third model's signature. That is why this make up works where a random pattern would not. It is one part of the archive borrowing from another, on the shape everything started from.
Recipe one: black trousers with a clean ankle, a black tee and a grey overshirt, keeping every other surface plain so the print is the only texture in view. Recipe two: mid blue denim, a white tee and a black bomber, the standard frame that lets a patterned shoe sit without competing. Never wear this with another pattern, and skip camouflage entirely. The Mid collar wants a hem stopping just above it. Fit is true with a narrow toe box. Keep them dry, because textured panels hold water marks in the grain longer than smooth leather does, and brush gently rather than scrubbing.
Elephant print carries more brand recognition than most logos in sportswear, and its journey from a single 1988 model to a standalone signifier is a good illustration of how Jordan Brand works. Since 1997 it has been a standalone division inside Nike with its own athlete roster, apparel and collaborations, and its material codes travel freely across the catalogue: patent leather from the XI, carbon fibre shank plates, Kevlar on the XV, Flyknit from the XXX. Design partners including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS have all worked with those codes, which is why a print swap on an AJ1 reads as fluent rather than random.
Leather panels over a rubber cupsole, a padded mid height collar and the Wings mark that dates the earliest era of the line, with elephant print filling the panels that would normally be plain. The print sits on a textured surface rather than a smooth one, which changes cleaning: a brush works into the grain where a cloth just skates over it, but a stiff brush will lift the pattern edge, so keep it soft and keep the pressure light. The black and white blocking around it splits your maintenance in two, with the white panels needing weekly attention and the black needing almost none beyond conditioning at the toe crease. Air dry, never force dry.
