Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Redstone/Sail/Pure Platinum/Midnight Green. Redstone Midnight Green pairs a deep earthy red with a near black green, a combination that belongs to the current Mid programme rather than to anything from 1985. That programme exists because the Air Jordan 1 outgrew basketball: Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore designed it for the rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, it released to the public on 1 April 1985, and the first 50,000 pairs sold out against a target of about 3 million dollars over three years. Once a shape sells like that it stops being a product and becomes a platform. Earth reds and forest greens are the seasonal end of that platform, closer to outerwear colour theory than to court uniforms.
This is a cold weather palette, so lean into it. Brown or olive workwear trousers with a cream knit lets both shoe colours sit inside an earth toned outfit, and it is the most natural way to wear this pair. The sharper option is all black with a rust or burgundy accent up top, where the green reads almost as a neutral. Avoid bright blues and pure white clothing, which make earthy tones look dull. Fit runs long and narrow, so a half size down is standard. Brush dry after wet days, condition darker leather occasionally so it does not crack at the flex point, and let the pair dry away from direct heat.
Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997, and by 2022 was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Michael Jordan under the 1984 royalty structure. Colourways drawn from nature rather than from team sport are how that scale gets maintained outside the sneaker calendar. The 1 came into culture through basketball meeting hip hop, referenced by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z and carried into film language by Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising. A dark, autumnal Mid is that lineage dressed for weather rather than for a hardwood floor, and it wears far more quietly than any Bred or Chicago ever could.
Nike Air cushioning entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so the 1 Mid runs on a rubber cupsole and a firm foam bed. The Mid collar closes at the ankle, which is the practical middle ground between the Low and the High OG. This colourway is unusually forgiving: both a deep red and a dark green hide scuffing and creasing well, and neither greys out the way white leather does.
