Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Light Orewood Brown/Tech Grey/Sail. Craft is Jordan Brand's excuse to show the seams. The line has always used material as a message, from the elephant print introduced on the Air Jordan III to the patent leather that arrived on the XI, and Inside Out extends that habit by turning the shoe's construction into its graphic. Instead of a colour telling you what this 1 Mid is, the finishing does: exposed edges, reversed panels and unfinished textures where a standard Retro would be clean. It works because the underlying design, Peter Moore's panel layout, is strong enough to stay recognisable even when the surfaces are deliberately roughened. You are buying the shoe's skeleton dressed as the shoe.
Textured shoes want plain clothes. Wide leg beige or khaki trousers with a heavy cream knit lets the exposed materials read as craft rather than damage. The second route is workwear: brown duck canvas trousers, a flannel overshirt and a white tee, which puts the shoe in a family of honest, visible construction. Keep tailoring and technical fabrics away, since the contrast reads accidental. The mid cut suits transitional weather. Spray with a protector before the first wear, brush dry rather than wet cleaning, and blot spills immediately, because unfinished surfaces will hold a mark that a finished leather would shrug off.
When Nike handed the line to Tinker Hatfield from the Air Jordan III onward, the line stopped being a yearly basketball shoe and became a design series with its own language, one where materials carried meaning: elephant print as a code, patent leather as a provocation, carbon fibre and Kevlar as engineering statements later on. Craft editions belong to that same tradition, but pointed inward at construction rather than outward at performance. The willingness to sell an intentionally unfinished shoe is a sign of how secure the silhouette is: a brand only shows the inside of a design when it is confident the outside is already famous.
The Inside Out treatment reverses the visual logic of the upper, putting raw and unfinished surfaces where polished leather normally sits, so the panels read as texture rather than colour blocking. The mid cut gives you the padded collar without the full high top height. Style code DM9652 120. No material weights, stack heights or foam specifications are published for this pair, so the finish and the cut are the entire spec. In ownership terms, a raw or unfinished surface soils differently from smooth leather: it absorbs rather than repels, so protective spray before first wear matters far more here than on a standard glossy Mid, and stains set faster.
