Designed by Peter Moore and released on 21 March 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in University Blue/White/Black. A golf mule is the least likely object the Air Jordan 1 has produced, and it makes sense only because the brand stopped being a basketball line a long time ago. Jordan Brand became sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and sponsored Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, its first association football club, and golf sits inside that same widening. University Blue is not an arbitrary pick either: it is the colour of North Carolina, Jordan's own university and one of the college basketball programmes the brand outfits. So this is the founding silhouette, cut down to a backless slip on, in the colours of the campus where the athlete played before Chicago.
Recipe one: white golf trousers with a navy quarter zip, keeping the fit to the course register the shoe was built for. Recipe two: off duty, cream shorts with a white polo and a blue overshirt, wearing them as a summer slip on with no socks or with low profile ones. This is a warm weather and clubhouse shoe rather than an all day walking option, since the open heel gives no lateral support on pavement. Size snugly, because a loose mule slaps at the heel. Brush dry, spot clean pale panels with mild soap, dry away from direct heat, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials break down over time.
Golf is where a lot of sneaker design now finds a second life, because the sport allows a wardrobe that a basketball court never did. This model matters because it takes a silhouette carrying four decades of hip hop and basketball references, quoted by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and puts it somewhere those references have to be re read. University Blue softens it further, tying the shoe to Jordan's college years rather than to the Bulls palette. It is the brand acknowledging that its founding shoe now has to work in rooms that have nothing to do with the game.
A mule keeps the front half of the shoe and removes the heel counter, which changes everything about how it holds your foot. The forefoot has to do the retention work, so the toe box and eyestay panels matter more than they do on a laced pair, and the fit needs to be snug rather than generous. A golf specific build sits on an outsole made for grip on grass rather than hardwood, so the traction pattern is not the herringbone court sole. University Blue over white is a pale combination that shows grass stains and dust immediately. Expect the collar edge, where the heel would normally sit, to be the first area that softens and rolls with use.
