Nike has spent sixty years building shoes for the minutes that count, starting with Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron in Oregon because he thought American runners deserved something lighter. The Mind line takes the opposite end of that same day: the pregame, the walk from the bus to the tunnel, the hour after. The 001 is a mule, backless and pull on, designed for the part of an athlete's routine that has no scoreboard. This colourway runs geode teal against light menta and canary with chrome detailing, a palette closer to a locker room than a court, which is the point. It is meant to look like recovery gear, not competition gear.
Wear these the way they were built to be worn: shorts, a loose tee, crew socks pulled up so the teal has something to sit against. The second recipe is airport or studio, with wide track pants and a hood, the canary and chrome catching light against a flat black outfit. They are backless, so treat them as a short distance shoe rather than a walking shoe. Size to your normal Nike length; a mule that is too long slaps at the heel. Foam footbeds hold moisture and smell, so pull them out of a bag rather than leaving them sealed, rinse the footbed with cool water only, and let them air dry away from sun so the bright colours do not fade unevenly.
This is Nike in its Beaverton mode, designing around athlete routine rather than athlete performance. The brand has built signature product around individuals since it signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and continued through LeBron James and Kevin Durant, but the Mind line is aimed at the ritual instead of the person. The colour choice matters culturally: teal, menta and canary are recovery colours, deliberately unserious, the visual opposite of the black and red the brand sells to competitors. Slides and mules moved from the tunnel to the street on their own, and this is Nike designing for that route rather than reacting to it.
A mule removes the heel counter and the lacing, so everything the shoe does has to come from the footbed and the shape of the upper. That means a deep foam bed that holds the arch, a wide opening you can step into without bending down, and a collar that stays clear of the Achilles. The teal, menta and canary blocking is carried across the upper panels with the chrome used as a hardware accent rather than a full surface. Nike's cushioning language has always been about isolating the foot from the ground, from Lunarlite through to the current foams, and a pregame mule is the purest expression of that: no support for lateral movement, all comfort.
