Culture Noteā¢
Co.JP marks this as a release aimed at Japan, and Japan has been one of the most demanding audiences for this silhouette since collecting became a serious pursuit. The shoe itself is a Retro High in Midnight Navy, built on the pattern Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 to a six year, 2.5 million dollar contract that included a royalty on sales, a term reported to have paid Jordan between 150 and 256 million dollars in a single recent year. Regional releases exist because the Air Jordan 1 is one of very few sneakers with enough standing to justify separate editions for separate markets rather than a single global drop.
Navy highs are the most formal thing this silhouette does short of patent leather. First: charcoal wool trousers with a clean break above the collar, a navy knit, a grey overcoat, laces pulled tight so the shoe reads structured. Second: dark selvedge denim, a white oxford shirt and a suede jacket, the shoe standing in for a boot. Avoid athletic wear with this one, which wastes the colour. Good for cool evenings and dressier casual settings. Use a neutral or navy cream on the leather every few months, brush before and after wearing, keep the midsole clean with a damp cloth rather than solvent, and store with trees so the collar keeps its line.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity, and that market has never been American only. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, inside a resale economy valued near 2 billion dollars with several billion more projected, and market specific releases exist precisely because collectors chase scarcity by geography. The cultural foundation came from the collision of basketball and hip hop, with Spike Lee directing Nike's earliest campaigns while playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing the shoes on record. Navy is the version of that legacy you can wear to work.
A Retro High gives you the tall padded collar, the separated leather panels and the long lacing run, and navy is the tone that makes that construction look most like footwear and least like sports equipment. Deep blue absorbs the seam lines rather than emphasising them, so the shoe reads as a single mass at a distance and reveals its panel work up close. Nike Air entered the signature line with the Air Jordan 2, so the ride here is flat and firm, with no cushioning unit under the heel. Regional editions typically differ in material and detailing rather than in pattern, so expect the fit to behave exactly like any other high: snug across the midfoot for a week, then settled.
