Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 31 August 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Obsidian/University Blue. A grade school High OG is how the model's flagship configuration gets handed to the next set of feet. Obsidian, a navy so deep it reads almost black, is the least demanding way to do it: no team allegiance, no archive argument, just the outline. That outline exists because Jordan Brand grew from a signature shoe into a standalone Nike division in 1997 with its own athlete roster, apparel and collaborations, and by 2022 it was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. Scale like that is what keeps the original cut in continuous production in youth sizing, decades after the sport it was built for moved on to entirely different equipment.
Navy goes with everything a young wardrobe already contains. First recipe: grey school trousers or grey joggers with a white tee, the shoe acting as the darkest point in the outfit. Second: blue jeans with a black hoodie and white socks pulled visible, using the white base as the highlight. It is a genuinely all weather colourway, fine on wet days when a white or pastel pair would be ruined. Grade school sizing runs on its own scale, so measure rather than convert by guess, and leave a thumb width at the toe. Wipe the white panels after wear, brush the midsole with mild soap, and dry naturally rather than near a heater.
Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the 1 into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z made it permanent in music. The line also carries a documented darker chapter: in the late 1980s the shoes were associated with robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them, which is part of why a restrained navy pair in youth sizing reads the way it does today. The 1 is inherited culture now, and a GS High is literally how the inheritance moves.
Panelled leather, full height collar, scaled to grade school proportions with the assembly unchanged: toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel as separate stitched pieces. Navy over white gives softer contrast than black over white, so the shoe photographs quieter and wears easier with school uniforms and everyday clothes. The collar can be laced to the top for ankle support, which matters more on a younger foot that is still growing into its stride. Rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle. Dark navy hides scuffing well, so the white base and midsole edge are where all the visible ageing happens and where cleaning effort is best spent.
