Hyper Royal is the Jordan 1 colourway that made a virtue of restraint: a dusty blue held against grey and off white, closer to workwear than to a team kit. It arrived long after the model had stopped needing to prove itself on court, at a point where the Jordan 1's job was to be a wardrobe object. Nike's original commercial hope for the line was around three million dollars in sales over three years; the first shoe instead sold out fifty thousand pairs and passed one hundred and fifty million dollars, and everything since has been the brand learning what to do with that surplus of attention. Muted colourways are one answer: keep the pattern, lower the volume.
